The climate of Southern Indiana, while continental in type, is of a variable nature. A range of low hills about five miles northwest of Louisville, on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, present a partial barrier to cold winds in the winter months. During colder months, snow is occasionally observed on the summits of these hills when there is no snow in riverside communities.
As a whole, winters and summers are moderate in temperatures. Temperatures of extreme ranges are rare. Generally, March is the month of greatest monthly rainfall and October of least monthly rainfall. Snowfall, while seldom heavy, can occur during the months of November through March.
The percentage of possible sunshine in Southern Indiana varies from month to month, with the greatest amount during the summer months. The average date for the last occurrence in the spring of temperatures as low as 32 degrees F. is the end of the first week in April; the occurrence of the first 32 degrees F. reading in autumn is generally the beginning of the last week in October.
The prevailing direction of the wind is from the South and velocity averages under 10 m.p.h.
