New Albanian Brewing Company expands craft beer production

Downtown expansion plans include 11 new, full-time employees by 2010

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – (August 7, 2009) – One Southern Indiana is pleased to announce New Albanian Brewing Company’s (NABC) plans to expand brewing operations at its Bank Street Brewhouse at 415 Bank Street.  This location will function as NABC’s larger-capacity production brewery suited for canning and regional distribution.  The company will also maintain its original location at The Public House and Pizzeria at 3312 Plaza Drive where it has brewed award-winning house beers since 2002.

“Our location in Southern Indiana provides a wonderful strategic location for growing NABC’s craft brewing operation into the status of regional player because our future markets in nearby population centers are only a few hours away by highway,” said co-owner Roger Baylor.  “Furthermore, the state of Indiana is willing and able to do what it takes to nurture these conditions for growth. As a Hoosier company born and bred, we’re able to remain right here in Indiana and ship our beer to markets both here and in other states.”

Along with creating 11 additional jobs, the company is investing more than $778,000 to lease, improve, and further equip its existing 4,000 square-foot facility.  The Bank Street Brewhouse has operated primarily as a restaurant since March and brewing machinery was received in May.  Installation took place in June and July and the new location commenced brewing its first official batch on July 28.  The family-owned brewery currently employs 55 associates at its two facilities and plans to hire brewing, canning, and support associates as production capacity increases.

“Revitalizing downtown New Albany is an important part of economic development here in Southern Indiana,” said Michael Dalby, president and CEO of One Southern Indiana.  “NABC fills a niche in our business community and we look forward to witnessing their growth and success for many years to come.”

In March of this year, the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County (HFFC) named the New Albanian Brewing Company as one of two recipients of its Small Business Revolving Loan Fund program.  One Southern Indiana administers these grants for HFFC.  NABC used $50,000 in HFFC loan funds to finance the completion of its Bank Street Brewhouse and new equipment for their facilities.

“It’s always good news to announce that a company is expanding and creating new jobs in its hometown,” said Governor Mitch Daniels. “New Albanian Brewing Company is further proof that Indiana has a business environment that encourages growth in tough economic times.”

Through the City of New Albany’s Urban Enterprise Zone, the New Albanian Brewing Company will garner the benefits of phasing-in its property taxes while simultaneously increasing the tax base.  The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered the New Albanian Brewing Company up to $10,000 in training grants from the state’s Skills Enhancement Fund.

Since its creation in July 2006, One Southern Indiana’s economic development efforts have resulted in commitments for approximately 4,909 net new jobs in Clark and Floyd Counties.  The Bank Street Brewhouse represents the organization’s 53rd successful project location or expansion.  Combined, these 53 locations will contribute more than $223 million in new initial capital and $170 million in new annual payroll to Southern Indiana.

“The City of New Albany is thrilled by the investment and growth potential of the New Albanian Brewing Company.  They are a testament of the entrepreneurial spirit that resides in downtown New Albany,” said Mayor Doug England.
