Miniature Books Exhibit Coming to Louisville

To promote knowledge of miniature books, the Miniature Book Society has created a traveling exhibit showcasing modern masterpieces as well as historic examples. The newest exhibit, which contains 63 of the tiny treasures – some from the 1800s - began its tour in January, and has recently been at Chapman University in Orange California and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. From Louisville, it will travel to the University of Kentucky in July and August.

The traveling exhibit includes books from the Miniature Book Society’s annual Competition, and some of the books on display will be artists’ handmade books. According to the Miniature Book Society, in the United States a miniature book is generally considered to be one that is less than three inches in height, width or thickness. Outside of the U.S. up to four inches is still considered to be miniature.

Centennial Graphics Group, Inc., a book publisher in New Albany IN, has donated the funds to make this exhibit available in collaboration with the Ekstrom Library Special Collections department at The University of Louisville from June 7 through July 2. Centennial has bound miniature books as a part of advertising campaigns and for collectors and will have some of their miniature books on display. The Ekstrom Library is open from 9AM to 5PM Monday through Friday. The exhibit is open to the public. The Ekstrom Library is located on The University of Louisville’s main campus behind the Speed Art Museum.
