Recycle Used Packing Peanuts at PostNet
Store joins national effort to reuse plastic packaging materials
JEFFERSONVILLE, In – Each year, millions of pounds of used packing peanuts end up in landfills. Now, Southern Indiana residents can help to reduce that number simply by dropping off their packing peanuts at PostNet.
PostNet recently became an approved collection center for the Plastic Loose Fill Council, an organization formed in 1991 to promote the reuse of polystyrene loose fill, commonly known as packing peanuts.
“After the holidays, people usually end up with a bunch of packing peanuts that they just can’t bring themselves to throw away,” said PostNet owner Mike Bickwermert. “Now, instead of throwing them away or storing them, they can bring the peanuts to us.”
When customers drop off used peanuts, PostNet will reuse them in their day-to-day shipping operations.
“We’re always looking for ways to be more ‘green,’ and we know our customers are too,” said Bickwermert. “This way, you can help protect the environment just by visiting PostNet.”
But before you start hauling in bags of peanuts, here are a few suggestions:
- Make sure to sift through them thoroughly. You’d hate to drop off a load of peanuts, and then finding out that you missed the family heirloom ring that Aunt Gertrude sent you.
- If you want to be extra helpful, separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable peanuts. PostNet can use either, but they don’t like to mix them. (Not sure if your peanuts are biodegradable? Put them in water. If they dissolve, they are not plastic, but instead are made from a vegetable derivative.)
