Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition Opens the Tax Season With Free Taxpayer Preparation Assistance Locations for Low-Income Singles, Single Parents And Families

(Jan. 25, 2010)—Free tax preparation is available to low-income singles, single parents and families in Southern Indiana through the Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition, fulfilling on its mission of helping families achieve financial stability through primary locations in Clark, Floyd, Harrison, and Scott Counties.  For complete information go to http://assetbuildingcoalition.org/

In 2009, the SIABC, in partnership with other organizations, brought $1.7 million back in the Southern Indiana community by preparing more than 2270 tax returns at no charge to the participants. 

Taxpayers qualify if:

*As a single parent with children, or any household, where earnings for 2009 were less than $48,000, or

*As a single, earnings for 2009 were at or below $13,400.

Taxpayers can dial 211 for a list of locations and hours in Southern Indiana, including locations in Louisville, KY (for those employees that work in Kentucky, and live in Southern Indiana.

 “Our mission is to help our area families find financial freedom, beginning with appropriate tax filing preparation, as well as financial counseling, and other related financial education services for the those struggling with work-life balance and low-income issues,” explained Whitney Bishop, Executive Director of the Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition. The length of time for tax preparation varies, but is generally one hour for those coming in with the requested materials listed below:

    *  W-2s

    * Social Security card or ITIN Number

    * Children’s Social Security card or ITIN

    * Valid picture identification

    * Bank account information

    * Last year’s tax return

    * 1099s (if applicable)

    * Childcare provider name, address, tax ID number

    * Amount of 2009 Economic Recovery Payment

    * Closing paperwork (if claiming home credit)

    * If renter, landlord address

    * New Car Purchase - tax and license records

About SIABC

The Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition assists families and individuals living in the following Indiana counties: Clark, Floyd, Harrison, and Scott, achieve financial stability and growth to improve their lives and strengthen our community.  The Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition (SIABC) was formed in 2005 by the Clark County, IN community through a grant from the Indiana Association of United Ways. The lead agencies were Metro United Way of Clark County and the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.

SIABC began the process of incorporating as our own organization in 2007, formed a Board of Directors, and in July of 2008 was awarded its 501(c)(3) designation by the IRS.  Other agencies that participate in partnership for the season’s tax filing assistance include (in no particular order): AARP, Horseshoe Foundation, the Metro United Way, Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, JP Morgan Chase Foundation, Gannett Foundation, Community Action Partnership, The Lifelong Learning Center, and Your Community Bank, and The Indiana Association of United Ways.
