In addition to the malls, a number of neighborhoods and individual streets have gained reputations for exceptional shopping over the years. The following are considered tried-and-true shopping destinations:

Lewis & Clark Parkway in Clarksville (Indiana)
This two-mile strip in the heart of Southern Indiana offers shoppers from all over the Louisville/Southern Indiana region a variety of shopping choices. In fact, many shoppers find this area much more convenient than shopping in other parts of the region. Besides the Green Tree Mall, this shopping district yields a diversity of stores that includes Bass Pro Shop, Kmart, Shoe Sensation, Circuit City, h.h. Gregg, Pier One, Shoe Carnival, Home Depot and Hobby Lobby.

Veteran’s Parkway in Clarksville (Indiana)
Conveniently located at the new Veteran’s Parkway exit off I-65, this brand new shopping district offers consumers both convenience and variety. Home to a selection of new restaurants, Veteran’s Parkway is also the setting for a number of retail locations such as Lowe’s, Target (superstore), Old Navy, Lane Bryant, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sam’s Club, Walmart (super center), Best Buy, David’s Bridal and Kirkland’s Home Store.

Main and Market Streets, Downtown Louisville
For Main Street shoppers, the primary attractions are located between Fifth and Ninth streets. Gift shops at the Louisville Science Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum and the Kentucky Center for the Arts offer a high-quality selection of toys, decorative items and souvenirs. At the Kentucky Art & Craft Gallery, and the Chapman Friedman Gallery original works, many from local artists, are for sale or on display, and at Hubbuch & Co. you'll find nifty gifts and accent pieces for the home. Over on East Market Street, there's Joe Ley Antiques, Zephyr Gallery, Gallery Hertz, Towne House Antiques and The Garden Wall, and West Market has the whimsy-indulging TryArt Gallery.

Bardstown Road Area
Congested traffic is part of the urban charm of this north-south artery, which cuts through Louisville's hippest neighborhood, the Highlands. It's here that you’ll find modern trends (Body Art Emporium, Kentucky Hemp Outfitters) amid ‘60s-flavored shops such as Grateful Threads and Leatherhead. Music stores abound, including ear X-tacy, Better Days Records and the Doo-Wop Shop; and unique and unusual objets d’art are available at such local spots as Swanson Cralle Gallery, Edenside Gallery, Discoveries and Kente International, which specializes in exotic African goods.

Frankfort Avenue
This former stagecoach and streetcar route offers the most interesting mixed bag of shops in the area. Galleries include Klausner/Cooperage, B. Deemer, Sister Dragonfly and Yvonne Rapp; antiques dealers include Scott F. Nussbaum, Henderson, 2023 and John H. Sterry. Consignment shoppers can browse Dee's, Sister Act, and Margaret’s. Among other interesting Frankfort shops are Elizabeth’s Timeless Attire, Mom’s Music, Woodford Landing Miniatures and Just Creations, whose exotic crafts are imported from Third World countries.

Chenoweth Lane
In the past decade or so, more than a dozen specialty retailers have set up shop in a few blocks just north of the railroad tracks in St. Matthews. Some are clustered in Chenoweth Square, including The Cheddar Box, Fleur De Lis, Digs Home & Garden, Watermark Gallery, Bedded Bliss and Three Dog Bakery, purveyor of gourmet pet treats. Along Chenoweth Lane itself you'll find fine jewelers (Brundage, Merkley Kendrick), gifts from the British Isles (The Celtic Centre) and fine apparel (Glasscock, Alter Ego for women, Animal Crackers for children).

Holiday Manor and Glenview Pointe
Conveniently located just east of the intersection of the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and Brownsboro Road (U.S. 42), Holiday Manor offers women’s clothing at Karen, Of Course, and home furnishings and accessories at Bittners and Oz Galleries/Dennis Tapp Interiors. If you’re in the market for gifts or jewelry, there’s Kelley’s Hallmark Shop, Moore Jewelry and Dallas Jewelers. Just east of Holiday Manor, Glenview Pointe is another shopping mecca along Brownsboro Road, with tenants that include Hawley-Cooke Booksellers, Zigler’s Famous Frozen Custard & Candies, Breadworks and Americana Interiors, which sells folk-art-style furniture, along with several restaurant choices.

Hurstbourne Parkway
For three-and-a-half miles between about Stony Brook Drive and Shelbyville Road, this busy East End thoroughfare resembles a broad river with countless eddies of strip malls into which shoppers can steer. Name a national or regional chain and you'll probably find it here: Pier 1, H.H. Gregg, Barnes & Noble, Staples, Comp USA, Lowe’s - the list goes on and on. At the northern end, in and around the Hurstbourne Forum Center, the many upscale offerings include Talbots, Jos. A. Bank, Dolfinger’s, Z Salon & Spa and The Cherry House.

The Summitt
Opened in the fall of 2001 at Brownsboro Road (KY 22) and the Gene Snyder, this newest of local shopping centers features 60 stores, most upscale. In addition to well-known names such as Talbots, Old Navy and The Gap (and GapBody), some new-to-Louisville outlets include Organized Living, Ulta Cosmetics and Build A Bear. Food options include Mitchell’s Fish Market, Martini Italian Bistro and Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Springhurst Towne Center
A retail magnet in eastern Jefferson County, this sprawling shopping center has a number of large stores in the shadow of Tinseltown USA’s cinemas, plus acres upon acres of parking spaces. The stores here include Target, Meijer, Kohl’s, Books-a-Million, OfficeMax, Bath & Body Works, Learning Express, Dick’s Clothing & Sporting Goods, Party Source, T. J. Maxx, Fashion Shop and Pix Sample Shoes.
