One Southern Indiana Recognized as 2009 Chamber of the Year . . .
March 11, 2009
One Southern Indiana is the 2009 recipient of the Chamber of Commerce of the Year Award by the Indiana Chamber Executives Association (ICEA).
This award annually recognizes a chamber of commerce in the state which exemplifies excellence in operations, leadership, and member services.
One Southern Indiana was formed in 2006 as the combined chamber of commerce and
economic development organization serving Clark and Floyd counties within the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. The organization saw a 55% membership increase during FY 2007-08 with membership growth of more than 1,300 businesses.
The Chamber served instrumentally in the decision of twenty-two companies announcing
plans to bring their job-creating investments to Southern Indiana with eighteen of these
projects being the result of existing commerce growth. These existing businesses are
investing over $79.3 million dollars in new capital. In addition, Southern Indiana
welcomed four new corporate citizens into the region in FY 2007-08 with a diverse
employment ranging from 10 new jobs at one location to the creation of 750 new jobs at
another. Together, these new jobs will add over $29.8 million annually in new payroll to
Southern Indiana’s economy. 2009 continues to see a positive trend in new business
attraction for Clark and Floyd counties with the announcements of two new companies
representing 180+ new Indiana jobs, over $10.8 million in new payroll annually and over
$6.8 in new taxable capital in Southern Indiana.
In addition to business growth and retention, One Southern Indiana’s governmental
affairs council meets monthly focusing on local, state and federal issues. Chamber
continues to play a huge role in transportation mega-projects including the Ohio River
Bridges Project.
The organization recently launched three new programs including Network of
Champions, Certification Connection and Broadband Forum reaching a total of 4,997
business professionals.
Christy Gillenwater, ICEA Conference Vice-Chair and President of the Greater
Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, said while making the award presentation, “this
relatively new metro organization continues to be a leader in the state for business
development.”
The award began in 2002 and previous recipients include: Fishers Chamber; Greater Fort
Wayne Chamber; Angola Area Chamber; Greater Valparaiso Chamber; Terre Haute
Chamber; Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana; and the Columbus Area
Chamber.
